Negra Es Bella,

2014

Robert Pruitt, born 1975, Houston, TX; active New York, NY
Printed by Tamarind Institute, founded 1960
2018-112
Pruitt draws on art history, pop culture, and political activism to address the complexities of black diasporic identities. This figure, adorned with a sphinx headdress and a T-shirt featuring the logo for the Black Panther Party and the words “Negra Es Bella” (Spanish for Black Is Beautiful, a 1960s cultural movement), is an embodiment of female empowerment. Pruitt bases his portraits of imagined female archetypes on images of his friends and people in his community.
