While employed as a war photographer for Soviet political newspapers, Baltermants covered major battles of World War II. In this image, Russian troops and a tank set up in preparation for the presumed conflict ahead. The scene highlights the precarious and life-threatening positions Soviet war photographers endured in order to capture images that propagated the social and political messaging of Stalin’s regime.
