Frankenthaler combined a variety of techniques in her printmaking to produce diaphanous layers of color that recall the effects she had developed in her paintings by pouring pigment directly onto raw canvas. This work marked Frankenthaler’s first experimentation with mezzotint,
a process popularized in the eighteenth century for its ability to produce subtle gradations of black ink. In addition to black, she built up swaths of yellow, orange, and red using twentytwo different colors, each applied with a separate printing plate. Some of these colors extend to the edge of the paper, imitating the way poured paint diffuses to create fields of color with unpredictable boundaries.
