Celebrated for her publicity portraits of Marlene Dietrich and other Hollywood movie stars, Marcus had established herself in Berlin by 1918 as a fashion and advertising photographer. She created this self-portrait two years before Hitler’s seizure of power in 1933 and her subsequent emigration, first to Paris and then to New York and Los Angeles.
