Composition of Fruit and Flowers,
1860
Roger Fenton, 1819–1869; born Heywood, United Kingdom; died London, United Kingdom, active United Kingdom and Crimea, Russian Empire (Ukraine)
x1976-302
Although Fenton is best known for landscapes that document the destruction of the Crimean War, he was no less fluent in the sensitive rendering of small-scale objects and textures during his service as a photographer for the British Museum in the mid-1800s. During his short photographic career, he completed a group of some forty fruit and flower still-lifes like the one seen here. This life-size celebration of the fruits of the British Empire includes a self-portrait of sorts: Fenton’s camera and tripod are reflected in the silver chalice at left.
