Using brush, ink, and silk, Tai alludes to the history of Chinese landscape painting during the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127), when the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, tributaries of the Yangtze in southern China, became popular themes in painting and poetry. The intention of the earlier artists was not to depict an actual view of the river, but rather to capture the expressive moods associated with the setting. Their brushstrokes not only created a landscape, but also demonstrated the artist’s thoughts and emotional state, the xinyin, or “imprint of the mind.”
