x1977-39
Life-drawing was at the very foundation of the academic program at the French Académie Royale de Pienture et de Sculpture. Drawings made directly after the nude model, such as this one, were executed by a professor as examples for the class and used for reference when designing large-scale compositions. A successful and versatile artist and educator particularly well known for his exquisite drawings, Natoire won the Prix de Rome in 1721, was appointed professor at the Royal Academy in 1737, and served as director of the French Academy in Rome from 1751 to 1774.
