Human Figure, Animal, Three Stars,
1959
Joan Miró, 1893–1983; born Barcelona, Spain; died Majorca, Spain
x1979-94
Miró executed this lyrical drawing on a subscription form for the Círculo Artístico de Sant Lluc, a collective in Barcelona that the artist joined in 1913. The artistic circle was formed in the spirit of a medieval guild, to protest the bohemian behavior prevalent among modern artists in Barcelona and to promote a commitment to traditional Catalan values. The group held an outstanding collection of modern art, much of which was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The Círculo’s artists created drawings such as this to be auctioned to support the group’s activities.
