Gertrude Käsebier, 1852–1934; born Des Moines, IA; died New York, NY
x1976-338
A wildly successful amateur photographer, Käsebier rose to fame for her revolutionary mode of portraiture. She traveled to Paris to photograph Rodin in his studio in September 1905 after a formal introduction from her friend and fellow photographer Adolf de Meyer. Despite Rodin’s initial reluctance to having his portrait taken, Käsebier was able to capture him in an almost meditative state as he gazed at one of his sculptures.
