Édouard Baldus, 1813–1889; born Prussia; died Arcueil, France
x1977-114
By the 1850s the technical development of precision photographs printed from paper negatives made photography a reproducible and commercially viable art form that attracted conventionally trained painters, such as Baldus, to the medium. In 1851, Baldus was selected by the Historic Monuments Commission of France to document the nation's architectural heritage. He produced lavish albums of large-format photographs that captured France's Roman and medieval architectural past and earned him an international reputation as one of the foremost photographers of the day.
