Devant les Prussians (Before the Prussians); Devant Paris (Before Paris)
Georges Labardie Pilotell, French, 1844–1918
x1979-50
Pilotell was primarily known for his radical and unrelenting political caricature. He served within the provisional government of the Paris Commune and subsequently fled France after the uprising’s violent suppression. He was tried in absentia and sentenced to death by the Third Republic. Due to this sentence, Pilotell was never able to return to France, and he died in exile in London. This drawing may have served as a preliminary draft for a caricature, as indicated by the gridded format and the subject matter.
