Death of Atilius Regulus,
ca. 1662
Salvator Rosa, 1615–1673; born Naples, Italy; died Rome, Italy
x1980-5
Rosa made this etching ten years after his history painting of the same subject, The Death of Atilius Regulus, for which the adjoining drawing is a preliminary study. The large print evokes the monumental scale and harsh violence of Rosa’s painting, preserving even an atmospheric sense of unease in the clouded skies. Rosa dedicated this etching to his best friend, Giovanni Battista Riccardi, urging him to stay strong in the face of adversity, just as Atilius Regulus "remains a firm center in the midst of so many nails."
