More Context

What appears as a mesh of dew on the surface of this rectangular vessel is the ceramist Kondō Takahiro’s patented “silver mist” glaze. The glaze is an amalgam of platinum, gold, silver, and frit—fused glass—that forms tiny, molten droplets during firing. On Wave, the silver mist overlays a white and black design evoking a tumultuous seascape, formed from cobalt mixed with iron. This design pattern is a specific reference to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and the devastating human and environmental cost of the Fukushima nuclear incident that it caused. Kondō became deeply involved in aid efforts after the earthquake and continues to raise funds for those affected.
