Study for the Funerary Monument of Girolamo Canal,

ca. 1577

Jacopo Palma, Italian, 1548–1628
x1981-118

This elaborate sheet is a preparatory study made by Palma Giovane for the wall painting that once embellished the sculpted funerary monument of Girolamo Canal in the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. Canal was a Venetian naval hero who distinguished himself in numerous battles against Turkish fleets in the Mediterranean.

Palma’s decoration was barely legible by the eighteenth century, and no traces of it survive today. The wall painting was, however, described in written sources as incorporating the figures of Mars and Neptune, of seated prisoners (signifying Canal’s victories against the Turks), and of Fame trumpeting on a golden horn. A distinctive feature of this drawing is the ochre wash brushed onto the paper; this anticipates the monochromatic yellow palette employed in the final work.
