In 1969, Winogrand received a Guggenheim Fellowship to “photograph the effect of media on events.” In this image, a dense crowd at a women’s liberation march surrounds a male news reporter and the woman he is interviewing. Unlike the television news camera at left that is focused on the woman being interviewed, Winogrand’s camera was held slightly aloft so that the crowd is pictured as a whole, revealing that such events are designed to elicit media attention as much as they are gatherings in support of the causes themselves.
