Boat Repairing,

ca. 1880s

Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, 1853–1941; born Headingly, England; died Whitby, England; active London, England
x1984-197
Sutcliffe took up photography around 1871 and five years later set up a photography business in Whitby, England. He soon discovered that what he considered to be a good photograph and what he could sell were not always synonymous. As an alternative to his seasonal portrait business, Sutcliffe began photographing the town, its harbor, and its inhabitants. He preferred a naturalistic style; instead of posing his subjects, he would set up his camera in front of an activity and wait until he liked the composition. Only then would he ask the people in the picture to stay still while he made the exposure.
