Forest of Fontainebleau,
ca. 1860
Eugène Cuvelier, French, 1837–1900
x1985-38
A gentleman photographer who seldom exhibited and never published or sold his work, Eugène Cuvelier was nevertheless a prominent figure among the artists working in the Fontainebleau Forest. Corot introduced Cuvelier to Rousseau, Millet, and other artists of the Barbizon School, all of whom not only experimented with Cuvelier's cliché-verre techniques but also collected photographs to be used as source material for their paintings. In turn, the elder painter's naturalism exerted a profound influence on images Cuvelier made in the Fontainebleau Forest and throughout the Barbizon village.
