in ink: This is the form | given in a print | in Harrisons history | of London, but it | appears to me | to be invention-- | Dr. Shaw preaching | 1587 | St Pauls cross | London | The Sketch of this celebrated pulpit is from | a Print in the Library of Magdalen Coll. Cambridge | being one of the Curiosities collected by Pepys. | Exhibited to the artist by Mr. Lodge. & copied | as Vignette frontispiece to Blunts Sketch of the | Reformation | A pulpit cross formed | of Timber, covered with lead | and mounted upon stone steps which | stood in the midst of the church yard of the | Cathedral: in which sermons were preached by | eminent divines every Sunday in the forenoon, when the Court, the | Magistrates of the CIty, and a vast concourse of people usually attend | =ed. | There is notice of its use as early as 1259, but it was not finished | in the form here exhibited until 1449, bu Kemp Bp of London, and it | finally destroyed by order of Parliament in 1643.
