Jerry Uelsmann, 1934–2022; born Detroit, MI; died Gainesville, FL
x1986-102
Working with traditional chemical processing, Uelsmann creates his otherworldly photographs in a series of steps, masking and exposing different areas of photosensitive paper as he changes negatives. Seen in relation to Gustave Le Gray’s early seascape Brig on the Water (on view nearby), Uelsmann’s work is part of a long tradition of photo-manipulation by landscape photographers.
