光と影・3(馬穴) (Light and Shadow 3: (Bucket)),

1982

Daidō Moriyama 森山大道, Japanese, born 1938
x1986-150
In the decades following World War II, the economic and political landscapes of Japan were transformed through the country’s occupation by the United States military and the introduction of American technology and consumer culture. The period fostered a generation of artists interested in the complexities and ambiguities of everyday life. Among them was Moriyama, who, despite being influenced by cultural and social unrest, has produced images that are resoundingly apolitical. Here he focused on an unimportant subject, a garbage can, for the sake of exploring photography’s fundamental properties, light and shadow.
