Oscar Gustave Rejlander, British, born Sweden, 1813–1875
x1986-13
Fascinated with the emotional and expressive capabilities of the human face and body, Rejlander was one of the first photographers to document the struggles of orphaned and homeless children in mid-nineteenth-century England. Despite their posed subjects, his photographs were intended to raise social awareness about the poverty that accompanied his sitters’ conditions. His work caught the attention of Charles
Darwin, who hired Rejlander to produce images for his 1872 book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.
