x1989-30
Goldberg’s documentary practice is characterized by the agency he gives his subjects. Many of his portraits, including this example, feature a caption written by the sitter; these self-reflective commentaries conflate how society views his subjects and how they view themselves. This image is part of Goldberg’s sociological series on San Francisco’s wealthy elite, in which he combined text and image to reveal, reinforce, or disrupt viewers’ biases against certain groups.
