In the 1860s, many photographers sought to separate their medium from its mechanical process in order to elevate its status as an art form to that of painting. Calling for truthfulness and unity in photography, critics decried Robinson’s technique of so-called combination prints, a composite method using multiple negatives to fabricate genre scenes and expansive views. This combination print, with later painted additions, reflects the intermingling of painting and photography in Robinson’s work.
