The Gladdon-Cutter's Return,
1886
Peter Henry Emerson, English, born Cuba, 1856–1936
x1987-34
Peter Henry Emerson believed photography to be an art form, on a par with painting and printmaking. This photograph of a boatman gathering bulrushes for thatch is one of forty published in his book Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads, a series that eulogized rural life on the Broads—a picturesque area of small rivers and ponds situated on the English Channel, northeast of London. Emerson photographed his subjects directly from nature in a single exposure and printed his plates without retouching.
