Untitled from the series "Beans and Bacon",
ca. 1939
Aaron Siskind, 1903–1991; born New York, NY; died Providence, RI; active New York, Chicago, and Providence
x1990-149
In his early work, Siskind, a member of the leftist New York Photo League, concentrated on observable realities of the world in a social context. Around the time he made this photograph, he was shifting from this mode to one of capturing symbolic fragments of environments, objects, or buildings, often utilizing close-ups or jarring camera angles. This tractor belonged to Siskind’s dear friend Jane Teller, a printmaker and sculptor as well as a sculpting professor at Princeton in the 1960s, who owned a farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
