David with Butch Crying at Tin Pan Alley, New York,
1981
Nan Goldin, born 1953, Washington, DC; active New York, NY
x1989-26
For over thirty-five years, Goldin has created images of her family and friends that unabashedly embrace the snapshot aesthetic while portraying subjects typically taboo for the average family photograph: sex, drug use, AIDS, and death. Goldin began her photographic career capturing drag queens in her home city of Boston in the early 1970s. Much of her work since then has remained focused on representing friends belonging to the LGBTQ community. While David with Butch Crying at Tin Pan Alley is voyeuristic in its unflinching depiction of emotion, it does not reveal whether the subjects’ tears are caused by joy or by sorrow, allowing viewers to concoct narratives of their own.
