A Ferny Bank,
ca. 1857
Henry White, British, 1819–1903
x1990-262
By the mid-1850s, advances in emulsion chemistry put the art of photography within reach of growing numbers of devoted amateurs. Henry White, who was a lawyer, produced nature studies that celebrate the joys of direct, unaffected observation. In this strikingly modern image, intertwining branches stretch in feathery patterns across the entire breadth of the picture plane, forming a wave of foliage that gracefully builds, crests, and curls upon itself.
