Special Exhibition
Seven laconic bystanders pose for James Wallace Black on Boston’s Milk Street, a boundary line in the great fire that burned sixty-five acres of warehouses, homes, and commercial buildings in November 1872. Behind Black and his camera stood the half-completed New Post Office, which, having been spared from the flames, would become the centerpiece of the rebuilt district.
