Going-A-Milking,

1858

William Drury Chidson, British, active late 19th century
x1992-63

Among the second generation of British photographers, Robinson is best remembered for printing from carefully layered negatives to achieve the pictorial effects of his photographs. In this image, the milkmaid in costume and the fence on which she is leaning were photographed in the studio, while the rustic background was painted to create the illusion of a woodland setting. With subject matter sympathetic in many ways to that of Millet and the French realists working in in the Barbizon forest, Robinson was an outspoken champion for the consideration of photography as a fine-art form.
