Germaine Krull, French, born Poland, 1897–1985
x1993-165
Krull’s first collection of photographs appeared in 1927 as the portfolio Métal and demonstrated an experimental approach to seeing through dynamic angles and composition. Just two years later, her next book, Paris x 100, featured a more conventional collection of city views that were reminiscent of travel photography. This image of the Boulevard de Clichy exemplifies an intermediate approach. Krull uses the elaborate wrought iron Metro station railing in the foreground to collapse the heavily trafficked urban space that lies between it and the Gaumont Palace in the background. The result is a dense and energized photographic distillation of the streets of Paris.
