View of the Hudson River from Crow’s Nest Mountain,
ca. 1833–40
Seth Eastman, American, 1808–1875
x1992-252
A military officer best known for his depictions of the Mississippi River landscape and its Native American inhabitants, Eastman also worked as a drawing instructor at West Point Academy. He made this watercolor looking south down the Hudson River from the high vantage point of Crow’s Nest Mountain, as indicated in his inscription on the verso of the sheet. With the exception of the lightly penciled tree at the lower left, Eastman offered a highly generalized sense of the natural environment in the foreground while rendering the panoramic river vista, including distant sailboats, with a precision that reflects his training as a topographical draftsman.
