The relaxed posture of the figure seen here, as well as the lateral gaze with which he looks out from the picture plane, signals a familiar relationship between subject and artist. Hockney has turned to portraiture at several points throughout his career, and from 1968 through the next decade he painted friends, lovers, and relatives in casual poses and domestic settings, with the goal of presenting a realistic likeness of each individual.
