Shepherd with a sheep,
15th century
Portuguese or French
y1929-37
The meaning of this figure of a sleeping shepherd holding a lamb is elusive. Figures of shepherds appear in larger Christian narratives, notably the Annunciation to the Shepherds, where angels announce the birth of Jesus to shepherds in the fields. This example does not appear to have been cut from such a scene carved in relief, so its flat back is puzzling. It suggests that the figure was not intended as a free-standing, three-dimensional object.
