Madonna and Child

attributed to Master of the Virgo inter Virgines, Dutch, fl. ca.1483–1498
y1949-135
This Northern Netherlandish master is thought to have worked in the city of Delft. He is named for his painting in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, showing the Virgin and Child surrounded by virgin saints. The present devotional image is especially interesting because the composition was changed; an x-radiograph shows that the Child was originally higher up, with the Virgin’s arm in a different position.
