The Road to Calvary,

ca. 1535

Herri met de Bles, ca. 1510–after 1550; born Bouvignes or Dinant, Belgium; died Ferrara, Italy (?)
y1950-1

In this sweeping view that combines fantastic landscapes and cityscapes, a procession snakes along a winding path. Christ kneels at the center, pausing under the weight of the cross he carries to Calvary (Golgotha), the place of his Crucifixion. Rather than focus on Christ’s suffering, met de Bles depicted the moment when Simon the Cyrene helps Christ bear the burden of the cross. The figures are small in comparison to the vast landscape and pulsating crowd surrounding them; the viewer must sift through the painting’s narrative details to locate this tender moment of compassion.
