Richly decorated with gilding and enamel medallions, this chalice held consecrated wine during the Eucharist, the liturgical climax of the Mass that reenacts Christ’s actions at the Last Supper. At this meal with his disciples on the eve of his Crucifixion, Christ blessed and distributed bread and wine as his body and blood.
