Special Exhibition

As a realm lying to the east of Europe, the continent of Asia was viewed as exotic—"other than one’s self" according to the definition of Victor Segalen (1878–1919). Asia is depicted wearing a head scarf and flowing drapery. In her outstretched hands she holds a censer with fragrant incense smoke rising from its top. Her foot rests on a pillow and she is accompanied by a camel led by a putto.
