Special Exhibition

People in the New World were imagined to be a strange combination of the noble savage and the barbarous cannibal. Wearing a feathered headdress and scantily clad, America once held a bow and arrow, and a quiver hangs at her waist. She is accompanied by a parrot and lizard, and at her feet is a severed head pierced with an arrow. In a land of romantic hope and promise, cruelty and death are still encountered–Et in Arcadia ego ("Even in Arcadia I [death] am there").
