Park Scene (possibly Luxembourg Gardens or Tuileries),

ca. 1892

Unidentified American artist
formerly attributed to Theodore Robinson, 1852–1896; born Irasburg, VT; died New York, NY
y1959-66
In 1984, Princeton University senior Anne Marie Belli helped determine that this Parisian scene was not by American artist Theodore Robinson, as originally believed. Robinson primarily painted impressionistic landscapes, and no view of urban Paris exists in his oeuvre. Technical analysis revealed that the painting was cropped and retouched to be sold as a work by Robinson; the artist’s signature and characteristic diagonal brushstrokes were added decades after the work was completed.
