Lamentation,
ca. 1520
Workshop of Cornelis Engebrechtsz, Netherlandish, 1460/65 - 1527
y1958-16
This panel’s small size suggests that it may have been the focal point of a domestic altarpiece, a fixture of private religious life that increased in popularity during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Netherlandish audiences particularly favored the Lamentation as a subject. John the Evangelist, the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene and Mary Salome, Nicodemus, and Joseph of Arimathea exhibit an array of emotional responses to Christ’s death.
