Plaque of Saint John the Evangelist,

late 12th century

German, Rhenish
y1959-74
This plaque of Saint John the Evangelist originally decorated a larger object, perhaps a reliquary. The frontal, bust-length saint recalls the style of Byzantine icons and enamelwork, which, in turn, testifies to the dynastic ties linking the Holy Roman Emperors in Central Europe with their counterparts in Byzantium.
