Crucifixion,
recto: 17th century; verso: late 16th century
Information
recto: 17th century; verso: late 16th century
This painting features a scene of the Crucifixion. Mary Magdalene in a short-sleeved white dress, red tunic, and yellow cape embraces the cross. The Virgin Mary faints on the ground and is supported by Mary of Clopas. John the Evangelist stands in a green tunic and red cloak. Men on horseback crest the hill in the background.
This scene is painted on the reverse of a copper plate engraving (probably late 16th century) that has been cut down from a larger composition, the axis of which is 90 degrees to that of the painting on the obverse. This street scene features jousting in front of a three-story house where occupants watch from windows and a building with clock-tower is in the center background. In the foreground, part of niche (cut off) containing a statue of Mercury of which a leg and arm carrying the caduceus are preserved. Four putti carry plates of fruit and cake, followed by a pair of musicians (man playing guitar, woman playing triangle) and two men stand and point toward the statue.
