Alexander Liberman, 1912–1999; born Kiev, Russia (Ukraine); died Miami, FL; active New York, NY
y1964-186
A Russian émigré, Liberman began his more than thirty-year career at Condé Nast as art director for Vogue before being promoted to the company’s editorial director. The design style he pioneered there, with its bright colors and graphic shapes, was inspired by his knowledge of Russian abstract art and advertisements. While editorial director, Liberman sustained a parallel career as a painter and sculptor, bringing a similar graphic aesthetic to his practice, as in this piece in which he explored the expressive potential of pared-down forms and solid color.
