Maremme #1,

1961

Cleve Gray, American, 1918–2004
y1968-237
Gray graduated from Princeton University summa cum laude in 1940, with a degree in art and archaeology; he studied painting with James E. Davis and Asian art with George Rowley, writing his senior thesis on Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) landscape painting. Natural landscapes served as an inspiration throughout Gray’s painting career, and he often made sketches of the various sites he visited in his travels around the world. Gray titled this painting with the Italian word maremme, which translates to “salt-water marshes,” evoking the colors he used in creating it.
