Atmosphere and Environment X,
1969–70
Louise Nevelson, 1899–1988; born Pereiaslav, Ukraine; died New York, NY; active New York
y1969-18
Atmosphere and Environment X relies on light and shadow to give depth to the geometry of its surface, which appears lacy and weightless or bold and structured, according to the play of natural light. Nevelson’s sculptures began as collections of discarded wooden furniture, tools, and crating, which she reassembled in dynamic compositions of shapes and patterns, rhythms and accents. This work, commissioned from the artist by Princeton University, was her first monumental outdoor sculpture and first work in Cor-Ten steel.
