At the end of this painting, Lan Ying wrote an inscription describing his source of inspiration, the painting style of the Yuan dynasty artist Huang Gongwang (1269–1354). However, the influence of other past masters is evident in certain brushstrokes and compositional motifs. Under Lan’s deft brush, the various styles come together in a unified and lyrical presentation of an idyllic landscape. The artist’s use of thin washes of vegetable based igments over gold-flecked paper imbues this scene with an added layer of visual appeal.
