Corrado di Marca-Relli, American, 1913–2000
y1969-124
An Italian-American artist who spent prolonged periods of time in Europe, Conrad di Marca-Relli aimed to fuse European and American modernism. He shared Robert Motherwell’s love for the tactility and materiality of collage. Using a variety of found, aged materials, especially burlap, Marca-Relli elevated his collages to a scale and complexity equal to that of the monumental paintings produced by the Abstract Expressionists in the late 1940s and 1950s.
