A Catskill Brook
Worthington Whittredge, American, 1820–1910
y1978-47
Born in a log cabin in central Ohio, Whittredge painted portraits and landscapes in Cincinnati before departing for study at the Düsseldorf Academy with Emanuel Leutze, in whose iconic Washington Crossing the Delaware Whittredge served as model for the figure of Washington. He subsequently achieved his own artistic renown as a leading member of the Hudson River School. A Catskill Brook is one of several works by the artist bearing the same title, suggesting Whittredge’s affinity for such intimate woodland scenes.
