Sunset near St. Peter's, Rome (or Sunset on the Tiber),
ca. 1871
George Inness, 1825–1894; born Newburgh, NY; died Bridge of Allan, Scotland
y1982-12
Inness painted several distant views of St. Peter’s Basilica, beginning with a watercolor study executed on site in 1851-52. The undated Sunset near St. Peter's, Rome (or Sunset on the Tiber) relates closely to a later, 1871 portrayal of the commanding structure seen during daytime from a similar vantage point across the Tiber River, suggesting an approximate date for this evening scene, which would have been completed in the artist’s studio.
