Known for his delicate use of color, Ju Jie has illustrated the famous eleventh-century poem “Ode to the Red Cliff” by the polymath Su Shi (1037–1101). A river course is framed between tall trees in front and the bold forms of a cliff and waterfall in back. On the boat, three gentlemen seated by a low table are being served fish and wine, while the lead figure turns his head and body to look at the approach of the famed cliff. This may be Su Shi, who is often shown wearing the style of hat seen here.
